Gearbox Magazine would not be possible without the support of my wife, Vanessa. We met on eHarmony. That’s right. We met on eHarmony. In the years since, she’s been my rock. She kept the shitty, soul-sucking job so I could find my place in the world, jumping from one job to the next until I was satisfied. She was the one who suggested I open up what was launched as Mitsubishi Gearbox Magazine to all makes and models around the world. She’s pretty friggin’ brilliant.
I couldn’t do this without her. She’s my partner in crime and my best friend. She’s been to the DSM/EVO Shootout with me. She’s graciously opened our home to gearheads she doesn’t know because they are friends of mine (whom I might not have previously met in person). She’s picked up friends at the airport and driven them more than an hour across town because I couldn’t got time off for our annual HAMMARS weekend, and she’s driven us home when we inevitably drink ourselves invisible. (Seriously. That happened to Dino once.)
Her still-smells-new Nissan Juke sits in the driveway while my hasn’t-moved-since-2007 “race car” project collects dust and takes up an entire 2-car garage. On top of that, she’s even driving me to and from work while I’m slowly getting my daily driver back together. (Seriously. It’s been almost three months.) She spends weekends out in the middle of nowhere, volunteering as rally service crew with me, and she spends still other weekends shooting weddings and engagements, the proceeds of which have paid for our plane tickets to Europe every other year.
When I share my frustrations with her – like when I read about how awesome it is some lowest common denominator pandering, sensationalist churn factory has finally decided to do something I’ve been doing here for months or years – she’s more bummed about it than I am. Vanessa is my #1 fan. She makes me laugh every day. I couldn’t do this without her. And, in many ways, I’m doing this for her.
So today, I’ve giving her the best gift I can. I’m telling everyone how awesome she is.
If you’ve got a significant other who cares about you, make sure you let him or her know today too.
