Forum Friday: Gearhead News from Across the Web

17 February 2012 in Communities, daily driver, Featured, Gearbox, Gearhead, RoadRace Leave a reply

Do you consider new car reviews “news?” We don’t. Don’t get us wrong, as car guys (and gals), we get a kick out of seeing the latest sheetmetal and plastic to get iPod connectivity, touchscreen navigation, and OnStar, but there’s so much going on in the automotive world that’s more important, namely, what are the gearheads up to?

Today we start something new here at GBXM. We’re going to share five discussion threads from across the web because we think gearheads – people doing things with their own vehicles – are the most newsworthy thing going on in the automotive industry. We’ll give you a little backstory and get out of your way. And we’re going to keep doing this, too. Every Friday, five new threads to check out.

Maybe you’ll discover a new community through this and meet some new people. Maybe you’ll be the first to share something awesome with your friends back your home forum. Whatever the case may be, we really hope you enjoy this series and look forward to hearing what you think in the comments below. Let’s get started!

Ford-Trucks.com | Chevy Took the Gloves Off. How Will Ford Respond?
First thing you’ll notice when you click this link is that a moderator has locked down the thread. We won’t spoil the ending for your, but we will tell you it’s something you probably see all the time on your home forum (but not what you think).

Club Lexus | VIP Styled 2GS Thread
This link will take you to the middle of a thread that’s been running for a couple years. It’s all about pictures of VIP-styled 2nd generation Lexus GS. Now you might not be into the whole “stance” thing, but it’s interesting to see how a style like this is interpreted across a single platform. Some very clean cars in this one. Also, your definition of “action” may differ. (wink)

North American Motoring (NAM) | Raise My MINI for Off-Road. Help, Please.
Why would anyone want to lift a FWD econobox commuter car? You’ll have to read and find out. The would-be rallyista in me found a couple ideas in this thread particularly interesting. Just goes to show – you never know what you’re gonna find online. One of the neatest things this gearhead has seen in a long time. Kudos to those who do it anyway.

Corvette Forum | MT Grand Sport vs. 911 S
The Corvette and the 911. Two sports cars at the top of the food chain. The stuff of dreams for many of us. And yet, their owners put their pants on one leg at a time like the rest of us. Some very interesting conversation in this one comparing the two platforms by – eat this automotive “bakchodi” press – people who actually own them and live with them every day.

6 Speed Online | The Ultimate R8 V10 Twin-Turbo Build – More Than Just a Street Car
This one isn’t done yet and I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not. I mean, part of me wants to see it done RIGHT NOW, but then, I also want to sit back and ENJOY the process, here. Take one Audi R8 V10, strip it down, and break out the welder. This looks to be an incredible, one-of-a-kind project. Subscribed?
